Old Projects

2009.BrainJab

At first glance, boxing seems like a frenetic and brutal sport. Underneath all the visceral action, however, lies a strategic game with surprising depth. In an attempt to translate the core strategic concepts of boxing into a card game, I used gameplay mechanics from both 2D and 3D fighters like Street Fighter and Tekken, as well as gameplay elements from actual boxing games like Super Punch-Out, Fight Night, and UFC Undisputed. Once focus testers got the hang of the fighting system, the layering of mind games seemed to take on a life of its own! (Paper Prototype Available).

2009.Here Comes Treble

The core concept behind Here Comes Treble was to blend a rhythm game like Rock Band or Rez and combine it with arcade driving games like ExciteBike and Mario Kart. Although it ultimately proved to be not unfeasible with the time alloted for this project to program a race-course like a Guitar Hero note track, the sheet music motif remained in the visuals. (Torque Build Available).

2009.Bin Rummage

Bin Rummage draws the fast-paced matching and bluffing from the old family card game Spoons and the trading-within-the-community aspect of resource-based board games like Settlers of Catan to provide an extremely accessible, easy-to-learn experience that can be enjoyed in 5-minute,  bite-sized chunks. Also, it was a way to get people to gather around a table and make fun of 80s’ pop culture. (Paper Prototype Available).

2008.Mahjong Murder Mystery

This was just a sample Game Design Document I did for a class, but I ended up spending a lot of time developing the characters and world of the story. A dystopic Neo Hong Kong with bionic implants, seedy underground mahjong parlors, and a JRPG combat system? What’s not to love? (GDD Available).

2006.Snow Patrol Mosaic

One summer, I was at a Virgin Records in England and an album cover caught my eye. Snow Patrol – The Final Straw: what a beautiful and simple picture! I always kept that album cover in the back of my mind, and here is the eventual result: A stained-glass mosaic on a gradient-painted wooden slab. And I’m never doing something like this again; you wouldn’t believe how many coats of paint and other stuff it took to make a smooth gradient on that wooden slab.

2005.Juicy Shirts

I somehow won a contest in my high school to spend some time at Juicy Couture HQ and make this shirt a reality. It was sold at my high school’s holiday boutique and did not sell out.
